Pennington Gave Him a Healthy Life and a Wife

Joining a scientific research study at LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center doesn’t sound like a romantic love story, but for Elmo Winters, it certainly turned into one.

Mr. Winters joined his first research study in 2001, and at first, he was extremely skeptical about it.

“I approached it very reluctantly, and I was kind of surprised I was even accepted. It was a weight loss program that required me to actually give myself injections” said Mr. Winters.

Ultimately, he went through with the study and began to learn about his body and his health throughout the program. After learning so much from his first study, Mr. Winters had a thirst for more knowledge. He signed up time and time again and joined any study he was eligible for, which was where he met his future wife.

Therese Hill was a fellow randomized participant in the same study. Mr. Winters met her while exercising at Pennington Biomedical’s fitness center, and they formed a natural friendship over their intense 6-month workout plan.

“Let me tell you, it was grueling. I was coming in 5 days a week, so I was glad to have somebody there who could relate to what I was doing and who could encourage me,” he said.

Slowly but surely, Mr. Winters’ heart rate wasn’t just increasing because of the tough workouts, it was also because of a love connection. They began to date and see each other outside of the study; and just a few months later, they were engaged.

On November 24th of 2014, Elmo Winters and Therese Hill were married.

To this day, both he and Therese are avid Pennington Biomedical study participants.

“Anytime we get a chance, we sign up for a study. It has nothing to do with the compensation, it has to do with the fact that this is going to make me better and help me understand my own issues, my health, and so on. I’m going on 69 years old, but I feel every bit of 50. I really applaud the work that Pennington is doing,” said Mr. Winters.

Because of the work at Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Mr. Winters was able to find true love that he can enjoy for many more healthy years to come.
