Strategic giving allows you to make a meaningful impact while taking advantage of tax benefits that can significantly increase the value of your gift. The methods below can reduce capital gains, satisfy required minimum distributions, generate income, or reduce your estate — all while advancing world-leading science. Please consult your financial advisor or tax professional to determine which approach is right for your situation.
Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs)
If you have a Donor-Advised Fund through Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, Vanguard Charitable, the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, or another sponsoring organization, you can recommend a grant to Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation at any time. Contributions to a DAF are immediately tax-deductible, and your grant recommendation can be directed to any of our 11 research areas or as unrestricted support.

IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)
If you are age 70½ or older, you may make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly from your IRA to Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation — up to $105,000 per year (indexed for inflation). QCDs count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD) but are excluded from your taxable income, making them one of the most tax-efficient giving strategies available to retirees.
Ask your IRA administrator to make the check payable to Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation and mail to 6400 Perkins Road, Baton Rouge, LA 70808.
Gifts of Appreciated Securities
Donating appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares that you have held for more than one year may allow you to avoid capital gains tax entirely — while deducting the full fair market value of the securities. This strategy can be significantly more tax-efficient than selling securities and donating cash. Please consult your financial advisor before initiating a transfer.

Matching Gifts
Many employers offer matching gift programs that can double or triple the value of your contribution. Matching programs are often available to active employees, retirees, and in some cases board members. Ask your HR department whether your company participates — then complete the matching gift form and submit it with your donation. Your matched gift will be directed to the same research area as your original contribution.
Wire Transfers
Wire transfers are an efficient option for larger gifts. Please contact our office to obtain current wiring instructions — these details are provided directly to ensure accuracy and security.
Cryptocurrency
We are exploring our ability to accept gifts of cryptocurrency. Please contact our office to discuss your interest — we will confirm current capabilities and connect you with the appropriate team member.
Maximize Your Gift's Impact
A gift of securities, a QCD from your IRA, or a DAF grant can stretch your generosity further than a cash gift alone. Our team is happy to help you find the right approach.
